As parents we all know how quickly the years fly by. We treasure the sweetness of our children when they are little–each of their expressions: serious ones, shy ones, curious ones, and happy ones. These little expressions are so unique to each child, and it’s something I always wished I could bottle up and keep forever. The Vintage Vignette Heirloom Portrait is one way you can do just that. Your child’s expression frozen in time, displayed in the most elegant wall frames and meant to be displayed in the the most refined of interior spaces. These children’s portraits are not meant to live on your phone, and simply scrolled through on occasion. They are certainly not meant to live as digital files at all. These portraits are meant to be a part of the story of your home, just as heirloom portraits have been throughout history. framed on your walls, to enjoy for decades and generations to come.

FAQ

What is the ideal age to do an Heirloom Portrait?

While there is no ideal, I do have a few recommendations. I typically say as long as your child is able to sit up unassisted, and as long as they are able to sit on a stool relatively still for a couple minutes at a time, that is perfect! I have photographed kids from 8 months up to 10 years. All kids are wonderfully different, and while I have had some 18 month olds, for example, who are quiet, patient, and can sit easily for portraits, others at that age simply cannot (which is perfectly normal :) ). The same can be said for any age really. You know your child and if they would be up for it - if they are in a “stranger danger” phase and have a hard time detaching from you in a short time frame, I tend to say wait until they become more comfortable/outgrow that phase. The good news is, if they can sit for a minute at a time, we usually get what we need within a matter of 5 minutes or so, it's super quick!

What happens if my child does not smile?

While I do everything I can to get some authentic smiles, personality, and laughs (and usually am successful), I always say this is the perfect portrait style for a more serious expression. For most of history, portraits were serious and unsmiling in nature, so it works! Not to worry! Some parents even prefer it for that reason. However if you are dead set on smiles, then please make sure your child is at a good age/stage for these portraits and come ready to support me with ways to get laughs and smiles. If we don't get any smiles and you communicated before your appointment that this is your goal, you could request a re-do and pay the transfer fee to wait for the next Heirloom Event to try again.

Do you recommend doing all my children at once, or staggering them at a certain age?

Honestly, this is your call. For budgetary reasons if you want to spread them out, I totally understand that. However, I have always said I tend to think getting them all done at once is ideal. This way you are guaranteed to have these portraits in your hands and the editing will be consistent, etc. My editing style can change over the course of months/years, and I can never guarantee any two portraits will be appear exactly the same. That's what makes Heirlooms special and unique. Historically, if you look at old vignetted portraits, they were all slightly different sizes and shapes, etc. We never know what tomorrow may bring, so getting them done while you can is my personal recommendation.

what is the investment?

I have done my best to price these extremely well so that they are accessible to many. Payment is broken up into 2 or 3 installments, from initial booking to finalizing your custom frame selections. While pricing is ultimately dependent on the specific selections you make, you can plan on a minimum all-in of 870 per child. This includes 5 digital vignetted images, as well as a standard size, custom wall frame.
